if y’all didn't know, i’m a tgcf main hehe. i love this kind of fantasy novels a lot, and tgcf was actually my first danmei novel & it still remains my absolute favourite. this is a fav so the review will probably be super long oops

first of all, the characters (both main and side) are all rly interesting, and the author does take time to build their backstories, personalities etc. that’s one thing i rly appreciate abt tgcf, bc side characters often don’t rly have enough scenes and descriptions for readers to get a proper sense of their personalities, backstories and stuff. in tgcf, the author actly intertwines the main characters w the side characters such that we can get interaction between main cp, main characters + side characters, and also side character’s back stories, which is rly neat!

the MC / XL (my fav character) used to be a majestic crown prince loved by all, but later fell from his grace to become a trash-picking official often shamed and ridiculed at. in the first few flashbacks, he is a kind and stubborn prince who just wants to save the common people (cue his famous phrase) but after several setbacks and (very) cruel challenges, he emerges (in his 3rd ascension) as someone who still remains kind and helpful, yet at the same time more indifferent, jaded, and more understanding of the world. i won’t go into detail about his sufferings here bc it rly hurts me (and the ML), and it’s also a lot to write. my heart always feel like it’s crumbling and my tears always start flowing when i get to those parts where he suffered sm, my precious baby :(( another thing i love is that his character isn’t just only being a kind and helpful god, he is also quite morally-ambiguous imo. he has many aspects of his personality other than being nice, and that’s what gives this fantasy story more of a realistic feel. also!! he’s v strong and powerful, and i alw go heart eyes at the descriptions of him fighting lol, esp that scene w him against lqq (?? frick i forgot his name oops) like that was so hot i love xl sm. 

the ML/ HC is a cruel and powerful ghost king who really only has eyes for dianxia. through flashbacks, we get a peek at his tragic backstory, which also contributes to the angsty elements of this story (which again i won’t rly be touching on here). i rly love his attitude & behaviour towards everyone else vs XL, it’s rly hilarious and also sweet. his behaviour towards XL is so damn cute and i rly rly rly wanna know his private communication array password 😭

abt the main couple, they’re both hot, powerful and love each other very much. they both have different varying degrees of morality, with HC being more in the morally grey area, which i actly rly like hehe. i guess their r/s can be considered very slow burn with 800 years of pining, but the story is written in a way where the main timeline is the present day after his third ascension, then accompanied by several side timelines where we have a flashback and venture into their pasts. in this way, we meet HC fairly quickly (in bk1) and even at their initial stages of friendship, they are alr super super sweet and dog food is just being thrown everywhere. 

♥tldr♥  this is rly a must-read, and i highly recommend you to read tgcf if u haven’t alr!! the characters and storylines are all very well built and even though there’s quite alot of angst, there are also alot of comedic undertones sprinkled throughout the story. main cp is also very cute and very sweet.
